How to Discern the Next Right Step

How to Discern the Next Right Step

A Simple Guide for Hearing God and Moving Forward with Confidence

Introduction: Why This Matters

Life often presents us with moments where we’re unsure what to do next. Whether you're standing at a crossroads in your personal life, calling, or career, this guide is designed to help you slow down, tune in to God’s voice, and discern your next right step with clarity and peace.

1. Get Still Before God

“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

Before making any decisions, carve out intentional quiet time. Turn down the noise, both external and internal, and create space for God to speak.

Try this:

  • Spend 10–15 minutes in silence daily.

  • Journal what comes up; emotions, ideas, impressions.

  • Pray: “Lord, quiet every voice that is not Yours.”

2. Clarify What You’re Actually Deciding

Not every sense of uncertainty means a major life shift is needed. Define what you’re actually wrestling with.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this a decision about timing, direction, or obedience?

  • What am I really afraid of or hoping for?

  • Is this a decision I need to make now, or am I rushing?

3. Hold the Decision Up to Scripture

God never leads us contrary to His Word. The Bible is a plumb line for discerning His will.

Practical step:

  • Look up relevant scriptures related to your situation.

  • Ask: Does this align with God’s character and promises?

  • Pay attention to repeated themes or verses that stand out.

4. Seek Wise Counsel

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” – Proverbs 15:22

Bring trusted, godly people into your discernment process.

Ask:

  • Who has walked through something similar?

  • Who will pray with me and not just give opinions?

  • Am I open to correction or confirmation?

5. Test for Peace, Not Just Clarity

Sometimes the "next right step" doesn’t come with full understanding, but it will come with peace.

Check in with yourself:

  • Do I feel internally pressured or divinely prompted?

  • Does this decision bring peace even if it’s hard?

  • Am I trying to force what God hasn’t confirmed?

6. Obey in the Small Things First

Often, God reveals the next big step after we’re faithful in the small ones.

Practice obedience in:

  • Daily prayer and devotion

  • Serving where you are

  • Making amends or following through on something unfinished

7. Take the Step with Faith, Not Fear

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105

God rarely shows the whole path, but He always illuminates the next step. Move forward even if your legs tremble.

Reminder:

  • You don’t have to be 100% sure, just surrendered.

  • Delay often breeds confusion. Obedience builds clarity.

Reflection Questions

  • What’s one area where I feel stuck right now?

  • What do I sense God nudging me to do?

  • What’s one small act of obedience I can take today?

Closing Prayer

Lord, I trust that You lead me with love and wisdom. Help me silence every competing voice and hear Your direction clearly. Give me the courage to take the next right step, even when it’s small. I surrender my plans to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
